George's father, also called George, had been born in Mattershall, Norfolk. Between April and June 1882, he married Sarah Thomas in the Stockport area. The 1901 Census records him as being aged 45 and having a business as a wholesale baker and grocer. The family lived at 163 Chestergate. George was their youngest son and was also a cousin of Ernest Want, also commemorated on the memorial.
George was an early recruit into the Cheshire's Territorial Battalion but did not go overseas until January 1915, joining the Battalion as part of a draft of replacements on the 29th. On 16 February, the Battalion was in the trenches near Wulverghem, near Ypres (now Ieper), when a rifle was accidentally discharge wounding him in both legs.
After receiving treatment locally, George was brought to Queen Mary's Royal Naval Hospital, at Southend, where he appeared to be making an initial recovery. But in the days before antibiotics, recovery from wounds was a difficult process and he gradually deteriorated until he died exactly five months later.
He was brought back to Stockport for burial with full military honours. The local newspaper noted that "owing to certain circumstances, it was not expected that any of the deceased's regiment would be able to attend the funeral."
