Spc. Jesse Buryj, passed away Wed., May 5, 2004, while serving in the United States Army 66th MP. He was born on December 7, 1982 in Canton to Steve and Peggy (Merry) Buryj.

The 21-year-old Canton native was killed in Iraq, firing more than 400 rounds at a dump truck trying to crash a U.S. Army checkpoint, an Army sergeant told his mother.

A Humvee in which he was riding came under attack at a checkpoint near Karbala. A dump truck driver tried to crash the checkpoint, Spc. Buryj son shot the driver of the truck, which crashed into the Humvee. Spc. Buryj died later of internal injuries he received in the crash.

Jesse served in the Canton City Police Youth Corp., was a paratrooper and enlisted in the Army after graduating from high school in 2002. He wanted to become a Canton police officer.

He played baritone in the McKinley High School Marching Band, all four years, where he met his high school sweetheart, Amber Tichenor. Their band director performed the marriage ceremony on October 18, 2003.
