According to military records, Jacob was born in York County, Pennsylvania, and was the husband of Mary Noss. In 1860, he was a laborer living in East Pennsboro Township, Cumberland County, PA. He stood 5' 4" tall and had dark hair and gray eyes. A Civil War veteran, he first served two weeks (Sept 12 - 24) in 1862 with the 1st Pa Militia during the Antietam crisis. He then enrolled in Harrisburg February 20, 1864, with Battery F, 3rd Pa Heavy Art (152nd Pa), at the rank of private. He was honorably discharged on November 9, 1865, and was living in Michigan no later than 1880.
