Second son and fourth child of Johann Daniel Dinkel and Maria Ursula Von Ernst. The surname Dinkel has also been spelled Dinkle, Dunkle, Dunkel, and Dünkel (the German spelling places an umlaut [two small dots] over the "u").

Peter was born in Strasburg, Germany. He married Anna Elizabeth Wolfe in 1767 in Lancaster Co., PA. They had 5 daughters and 2 sons.

Peter served as a Private in the Revolutionary War, and is a listed patriot (as Peter Dunkel) by the NSDAR. He served in Captain Peter Forte's 3rd Battalion, York County Militia, from 1777-1780 and in Captain John Ehrman's 1st Battalion from 1780-1783. He also furnished supplies to the Colonial Army.
