Alvin Cummings, 61, North Liberty Farmer, Died; Rites Thursday

NORTH LIBERTY - Alvin R. (Ray) Cummings, 61, who resided on a farm one-and-and-half miles northwest of here, died at 5:45 p.m. Monday at Mercy hospital in Iowa City. He had suffered a heart attack at his farm Monday noon.

Mr. Cummings was born near Riverside on October 11, 1892, the son of Joseph E. and Mary Lingo Cummings. He grew up there and was graduated from Washington, Iowa high school and the Cedar Rapids business college.

His marriage to Marie Benda took place on January 20, 1916. They established their home on a farm near Riverside. In 1942 they moved to the farm where he lived at the time of his death.

He was a member of the North Liberty Methodist church and was past worshipful master of the White Marble Masonic lodge at North Liberty. He was also past master of the Riverside Masonic Lodge and past worthy patron of the Floral Chapter, O.E.S. at Riverside.

Mr. Cummings was a member of the Johnson County Farm Bureau and was a township chairman at the time of his death. He was also one of Johnson county's first Soil Conservation commission members.

Survivors include his widow; one daughter, Mrs. William Wright, Park Ridge, Ill.; one son, Harold R. Cummings, Waterford, Wis.; one sister, Mrs. Harvey Thomas, Pacific Grove, Calif.; and six grandchildren.

His parents and one sister preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Methodist church in North Liberty wth burial in Memory Gardens in Iowa City. Masonic services will be conducted by the North Liberty lodge. Friends may call at the Oathout funeral home in Iowa City until noon Thursday.
