Juanita H. McElwain Bell departed this life on December 21, 2008, at Jackson General Hospital, Ripley.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and Stella Tyler McElwain; a brother, Thurman McElwain; sisters, Lelia Gregory, Opal Kovach, and Helen McElwain; and husband, the Rev. Paul V.H. Bell.

Survivors include a son, Driscoll K. Bell and wife, Susan Bell, of Arlington, Texas; a daughter, Kay Bell Smith and husband; Dean Gail Smith; of San Juan, Capistrano, Calif.; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; and sisters, Gladys Hamilton of Upper Glade and Velva Duckworth and husband, Arthur Duckworth, of Ravenswood.

Juanita graduated from Cowen High School in 1937. She attended West Virginia Wesleyan and Morris Harvey colleges, where she received a Bachelor of Arts Degree and Early Childhood Specialization. She taught school in Webster County for eight years and did substitute teaching in Tucker County before moving to Ravenswood. She had a private kindergarten in Ravenswood for 13 years. When West Virginia started kindergarten in the public school system, she taught 15 years in the Henry J. Kaiser Kindergarten, making a total of 36 years teaching when she retired in 1986.

Juanita was a 4-H leader and a West Virginia All-Star recipient. She worked in 4-H camps where she taught classes. She was very active in the Methodist Church as a youth, and was a teacher in their church camps.

After marrying the Rev. Paul V. H. Bell, a Baptist minister, in 1946, Juanita continued to be very active in the work of the Baptist Church wherever he was the pastor. She has been the church secretary, Sunday school teacher, summer Bible School director, children's church leader and youth director. She was very active in the ABWM where she was chairperson for the White Cross and Love Gift. She was a deaconess in the church.

Community activities were also of interest to Juanita, where she worked on various drives to raise money for the Heart Fund, Red Cross, M.S., C.P., etc. She has been an active volunteer at the Ravenswood Library and an Auxiliary member at the Jackson General Hospital.
