John was a Civil War Veteran and the son of Jesse Gilley b 1800 and Leanah Clark Gilley b. 1810. He was the husband of Martha Dorty Wampler b 1826 who he married in 1855. John W. Gilley was the father of Elizabeth S. (which was Sarah Elizabeth b. 1855 wife of Samuel Augustus Shipley b. 1859), Melvin G., Peter H., Henry C.L., and Auburn P. per the 1880 and 1870 United States Federal Censuses.

The 1850 Federal census reports John at home with his parents and siblings in District 31, Lee Co., VA. They may have lived in the section of Lee Co. that was later redistricted into Wise Co. The 1850 census lists his parents as Jesse (50), Leanah (40),siblings are Elkanah (18), John (16), Elizabeth (14), James (12), Sarah (9), Adaline (7), Martha (5), Amanda (4), and Emeline (3). Jesse's farm value at that time was $3000 which was considerably large in comparison to neighbors whose values ranged from $50-$700.

The 1860 census finds John (26) married to Martha D. (34). Their children then are Sarah E. (5), William (3), Melvin (1). John's farm value is $1200. Living in Richmond, Wise Co., VA. Post Office: Big Stone Gap

The American Civil War Soldier database shows that John W. Enlisted in Company A, 51st Infantry Regiment Virginia on 29 Mar 1862. Promoted to Full Sergeant on 1 May 1865. Another report shows him Enlisted as a Private on 15 June 1864 at the age of 30. Enlisted in Company H, 64th Infantry Regiment Virginia on 15 Jun 1864. Auburn Lorenzo Pridemore (June 27, 1837 – May 17, 1900) a nineteenth century politician and lawyer from Virginia, commanded this infantry (found on Wikipedia.com).
