Elbert Carlyle (E.C.) Sanders, former owner and editor of the Rockmart Journal, died March 9 at a Rome hospital from heart failure. He was a former Councilman, Mayor Pro Tem, and earlier in his career had been a teacher and school principal. As Mayor from 1959 until 1963, he led the city through numerous civic improvements in the water treatment, fire and police departments and other municipal services. In the absence of adequate state funding for street paving, he pushed for and obtained major bond funding for local projects. A native of Pembroke, Georgia, Sanders was a graduate of Georgia Southern College in Statesboro, and served as a principal of schools in Meter and Vidalia before entering the newspaper profession. He bought The Rockmart Journal in 1946. From that time until his retirement in 1980, he was publisher and editor, writing a weekly column in addition to his overall management responsibilities. He was a longtime member of the Rockmart First United Methodist Church, and had been active as chairman of the Administrative Board, Board of Trustees and a regular Sunday School teacher for more than 50 years. Mr. Sanders was a founder of the Rockmart Chamber of Commerce, the local Kiwanis Club and was elected the Club's first President. Among other interests, he was an avid pianist and the author of two unpublished novels. He is survived by his wife, the former Hazel Waits, of Rockmart; four sons, Jack Sanders and wife Brenda, Alexandria, Virginia; Phil Sanders and wife, Janice, Athens; Wayne Sanders and wife, Jan, Rockmart; Neil Sanders, Rome and a daughter, Eleanor Dixon and husband, Richard (Dick), Marietta; three grandchildren, Greg.Sanders, Jennifer Sanders, Nelson and Andrea Sanders Collier; two great grandchildren, Cason Collier and Lillian Nelson; and a brother, Gene Sanders, Pembroke. A memorial service is scheduled at the First United Methodist Church in Rockmart at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 16. In lieu of flowers, the family request that contributions be made to the Rockmart First United Methodist Church, 135 Church Street, Rockmart, GA 30153. (The Rockmart Journal, March 13, 2002)
