Jersey City Mayor. The first African-American Mayor of Jersey City, he served as a Hudson County Freeholder from 1975 to 1978. He sat on the Jersey City Council for two terms, and was the United States Marshal for New Jersey from 1996 to 2001. A former marine,had been a member of the Jersey City Police Department for about 25 years, rising from patrolman to Captain he retired in 1991. He was elected Mayor of Jersey City in 2003, and was elected State Senator for the 31st District in January 2004. In January 2008 his wife will assume the same Senate seat he held.
