Civil War: Company D, 2nd California Cavalry

James O. Taylor, age 21 years, enrolled and mustered-in as Private, Company D, 2nd California Cavalry, at Sacramento, California, October 21, 1864. Private Taylor mustered-out, with his Company, at Camp Union, Sacramento, California, May 29, 1866.

Harry Taylor wrote: "The Story of the Life of James O. (Oscar) Taylor". This short story was hand-written by his son "Harry".

The story of my Father, J. O. Taylor -

My father was born in August 1833 (Family Bible it is written James was born 1842.) in the State of Illinois; 16 miles South of Wisconsin. He was the youngest of nine (9) brothers and two (2) sisters.

My Aunt "Taylor" told me the story how James Oscar Taylor had a 'bet' with his Neighbor in regard to who would live to be the 'Oldest'... Thus James dropped his birthdate back (9) years!

In the Spring of 1850 James O. Taylor's father, mother and family went on the road to California.

Father has told me many stories of the hardships of the trip. The lack of water, loss of stock, and sickness made the going very hard.

Father never mentioned meeting the "Latter Day Saints" when he came through Utah, although I have read that they were on the move at that time.

The Taylor's settled on the Cossumnus River and set out 40 acres of apples. In 1853 father went to mining at Michigan Bar. From 1853 to 1862 he worked mining, hauling freight, and farming. (In 1853 JamesO would have only been 11 years old... Now-a-days.. we have 'laws' against children working at that age?)

Some time in 1862 Father volunteered as U.S. Calvary in Company "C" of California. He served in the Eastern states until Peace was declared.

In 1872 Father was married to Fanny Jane Makee. His first born was a daughter, Mary Taylor. Two years later a son, who died at 2 years old.

In 1876 the family moved to Oregon and spent the winter of 1876 near Ashland. In 1877 moved to a homestead on Bear Creek, 20 miles South of Prineville, Oregon. Four years later, in May 17, 1881, I was born at Prineville, Oregon. Owing to the cold winters in 1890, Father and Mother moved to Springfield, Oregon; living there one (1) year, then to Fairmount, Oregon. We lived at Fairmount four and one-half (4-1/2)years and in 1895 traded for a brush ranch on "Spencer Creek".

I was married to Miss Belle Blanton in 1905. My Mother passed away three (3) years later. Then my Father lived with my family for twenty (20) years, being 95 years of age.

My Father was a very mild man, by nature, never spoke disparingly of his neighbors. He was loved by the family and all his friends.

James Oscar and Fanny Jane McKee Taylor had three (3) children: Mary Taylor born about 1873 Slough House, Sacramento Co., CA and died about 1940 in CA; Melvin Henry Taylor born 25 Jan 1875 in Slough House, Sacramento Co., CA and died 5 Jul 1877 Ashland, Oregon or Bear Creek, near Prinveville, OR, at about 2 years old and Harry Taylor born 17 May 1881 in Prineville, Deshutes Co., OR and died 18 Jun 1960 Eugene, Lane Co., OR.

After reading James Oscar's 'story' (above) over and over.. receiving 'confirmation' from Cathy Keskeys, 'Family Historian', with pages from the family 'Bible' that gives the dates of James Oscar Taylor and his sibling's birthdates... I called an 'Aunt' who knew James Oscar Taylor... Told her about the discrepancy and this is what she told me: "James and a neighbor, farmer, had a bet as to who would live the longest.. Thus James gave his birthdate as '1833' so he would have a 'head start' on his neighbor ... When, actually, his real birthdate was '1842'...."
