Fahning, Wendy 52 of St. Paul

Wendy Fahning (nee Wicklund) of St. Paul, Minn., died on April 3, 2012 surrounded by her family, after a long battle with multiple myeloma. She battled her cancer as she lived, with courage, generosity, wit, and charm.

Wendy was born on Aug. 12, 1959, to Dudley and Shirley (nee Gilbertson) Wicklund in Red Wing, Minn., where she grew up. Wendy excelled in volleyball, basketball, and track at Red Wing High School. She graduated in 1977. Wendy then attended Hamline University in St. Paul, where she played basketball and volleyball, and graduated in 1982.

Shortly after graduating from Hamline, Wendy started Wendy's Wee World Day Care Center in St. Paul. Wendy owned and operated it for 24 years. It was a bright, happy, welcoming center serving a diverse customer base that reflected Wendy's sunny disposition. She sold the center when her cancer interfered with her ability to operate it in the manner she desired.

While at Hamline, Wendy met Paul Fahning. They married in 1985 and had two children, Heidi and Chad. Wendy adored her children and welcomed their friends as well. She loved to attend their sporting events, although she claimed she did not see much of the action, preferring to talk with the other parents.

Her children also gave Wendy the opportunity to indulge her other passions, photography and travel.

She is also survived by her siblings, Penny Fredrickson and Jerry (Catherine) Wicklund.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, at First United Methodist Church, 403 East Ave., Red Wing, MN 55066.

Interment at Burnside Cemetery in Red Wing.

Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, at Mueller-Bies Funeral Home - Roseville, 2130 N. Dale St, 55113, and for 1 hour prior to the service at the church.

At Wendy's request, memorials to Hamline University or to DeLaSalle High School in Minneapolis.

Mueller-Bies, 651-487-2550.
