Laurence Harter was born in Onondaga County, New York on November 24, 1817. He is the son of Lawrence and Maria Harter. He was married, July 3, 1837, to Miss Maria Bartlett, daughter of John Bartlett. They have two sons: David M., married to Miss Amanda Nelson and residing in the town of Hartford; and Charles H., married to Louisa Orcutt and residing in Waupaca County. Mr. Harter and family came to Wisconsin in 1843. They spent four years in Milwaukee, and then moved to the town of Herman, Dodge County, where they resided till 1865, when they moved to Hartford. Mr. Harter was a farmer on Sec. 18 in Hartford, owning 130 acres of land in Washington County and 200 acres in Waupaca.
