Michael was a Coal Miner, and a Harnes Maker.
He married my grandmother on Jan. 31, 1887, Austria
A Roman Catholic.
My grandfather spoke seven languages. He was a shot firer (dynamite man) in the coal mines. This was the reason for his early death. He usually worked alone at night in the coal mine blasting down the coal for the day crew. It was usual for there to be a niche in the wall in the mine where he could protect himself from the blast and flying coal. One night there was no niche and he was hit in the leg by a piece of coal. When the men came to work the next morning they found him injured. Blood poisoning from the injury was the cause of his death. He died at the age of 54 in his home on Friday, Sept. 2, 1921 near Allison #1. He was employed as a shot foreman for the past 12 years. His death came as a great shock to the community where he was highly respected.
On Sept.6, 1921 Requiem High Mass was read at 8 A.M. at St. Peter's R.C. Church, Brownsville, PA officiated by Rev. Fr. Arron and burial was at 2:30PM at Redstone Cemetery.
My grandfather had serious foot trouble. He would buy shoes two sizes too large. His children called his shoes the "Titanic."
