Mary Velma Ackland

The memorial service of Mary Velma Ackland, 85, of 803 Broadway, Normal, will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church, Normal. The Rev. James Bortell will officiate.

She will be cremated, and private inurnment will be scheduled.

Stubblefield Funeral Home, Normal, has charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Ackland died at 7:50 p.m. Wednesday (March 24, 1993) at the University of Louisville (Ky.) Humana Hospital. Death was after a fall March 3.

She was born May 16, 1907, in Jefferson County, Ind., a daughter of George W. and Mary Agnes Taylor Riggle. She married Merritt C. Ackland Aug. 6, 1938 in Indianapolis. He survives.

Other survivors include two daughters, Barbara Cade, Hot Springs, Ark., and Sharon Miller, San Luis Obispo, Calif.; a son, John Riggle, Ackland; Bakersfield, Calif.; two sisters, Helen Graham, Norfolk, Va., and Grace Evans, Dupont, Ind.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Two brothers and three sisters preceded her in death.

Mrs. Ackland, who was educated at Oakland City (Ind.) College, taught and was a Cooperative Extension Adviser, University of Illinois, before her marriage.

She was active in community, church and school projects and was a former president and PTA district publicity chairman and assistant Girl Scout leader in California.

In the Twin Cities, Mrs. Ackland and her husband had been active in political and community projects.

She had been a vice president of the Women's Society of Christian Service of Wesley United Methodist Church; a member of the Idlers, Margaret Fuller, History clubs; League of Women Voters; and Republican Women's Club.

Mrs. Ackland enjoyed playing bridge.
