Thomas Post was the 5th child of Stephen Post and Hanna (Hosmer) Post. Thomas was about 8 years old when his family moved from Saybrook to Hebron. He married Dinah Brown (1702-1775) in 1730 in Hebron, and all six of their children were born in Hebron. Dinah died in 1775 and Thomas then married Elizabeth Culver at Gilead in 1776. There were no children from this second marriage. The children of Thomas and Dinah Post were:
Thomas James Post
Lieutenant Eldad Post (founder of Post Mills, VT)
Peter Post
Aaron Post
Joel Jacob Post
Captain Jeremiah Post

Thomas was very active in community affairs and held several town offices: town lister in 1728, highway surveyor in 1735, school committee in 1745, and selectman in 1750 through 1752. He was commissioned lieutenant of the Hebron Trainband in 1749. Thomas was also active in the affairs of the Gilead Ecclesiastical Society, which he helped to organize in 1748. He served on several school and society committees, and was elected Deacon of the Gilead Church in 1770. He is reported to have been involved in the Revolutionary War.

Thomas Post's gravestone is inscribed, "In memory of Deacon Thomas Post who departed this life December the 2nd 1782 in ye 83 year of his age. Rejoice O young man in thy youth and let thy heart cheer the Christ of thy youth."
