He was the son of to Charles Eli and Emma Elizabeth Hill Stewart. His father is buried in Providence Cemetery, and his mother is buried in Fields Chapel Cemetery. His twin brother, Francis Marion Stewart, is also buried in Fields Chapel Cemetery. Mert was a retired police officer. He shares a stone with his wife, Ida Crume Stewart, who he married 11 March 1897 in Cherokee County, TX. He was residing in Houston, TX at the time of his death there.

After retirement, for extra money he was a School Crossing Guard, he use to walk me across the street at Burnett Elementry School on Canal St in Houston, Texas in the late 40's
