Franklin Bass, 77, longtime city resident, retired oilman, and prominent civic leader, passed away at his home April 28, 1996 after a lengthy illness. Born October 3, 1918 in Sour Lake Texas, the son of Frank and Lola Bass, he grew up in the oil field camps of East and South Texas, where his father worked as a field superintendent for Humble Oil and Refining Company. He attended Victoria Junior College and Texas A&M.

Bass work for Humble Oil for more than twenty years interrupted early on by service in the United States Army infantry during World War II. Returning from the war, Bass settled in Corpus Christi, where he lived the rest of his life. In 1968, he went to work for Flournoy Drilling Company as Business Representative, a position he continued to fill until his death, although he formally retired in 1986. His many oil industry associations included membership in the American Petroleum Institute, the Association of Industrial and Mechanical Engineer, and the Society of Petroleum Engineers. He was a leading force in the International Oilmen's Golf Tournament in McAllen, serving a lengthy tenure on its board of directors and three terms as president. Bass was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church where he served on the deacon body. Active in denominational life, he served on the board of trustees of East Texas Baptist University and the advisory council of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. At the time of his death, he was a member of the advisory board of the George Truett Theological Seminary of Baylor University.

In 1996, Bass was appointed. . . .School District. He successful stood for election in 1968 and reelection in 1974. During his fourteen years on the school board, he played a leading role in the Activities of the Texas Association of School Boards, serving as its president in 1979. That year, Governor William Clements named him to the Advisory Committee on Education.

Bass' civic activities also included volunteer work for the National Little League, Gulf Coast Council Boy Scouts, Campfire Girls, Heart Fund, and United Way. He was a Mason, belonging to the Oso Naval Lodge, and the Grand Lodge of Texas, and a Shriner, affiliated with the Al Amin Temple. He was a member of the Navy League, and a supporter of the 12 Man Foundation of Texas A&M.

Survivors include his wife of almost forty-nine years, one son, two daughters, and three grandchildren.

Visitation will begin at 1:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. Monday, April 29, 1996 at Caoe-Mills Funeral Directors, Everhart Chapel.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 30, 1996 at first Baptist Church with Dr. Paul Armes officiating. Interment services to follow at Seaside Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be: Herbert Chabysek, Mike Dillingham, Lucien Flournoy, Tom Hallanan Harry Hill, John McGregor, Ray Morgan, Lewis Parris, John Thomason, Red West, and Dana Williams.

The deacon body of First Baptist Church will be honorary pallbearers. The family suggests that memorials might be given to First Baptist Church 3115 Ocean Drive, Corpus Christi, TX 78404; American Cancer Society, 4014 S. Alameda, Corpus Christi, TX 47844, or the charity of the giver's choice.
