He was a former bank clerk who stood 6 ft 7 1/2 inches tall. He went into a physical decline and died after working for the Bank of England for 9 years. He was afraid of grave robbers who were offered upwards of 200 guineas by surgeons eager to get their hands on his body. His friends convinced the Bank of England to bury him in the Garden Court which had formerly been the cemetery for St Christopher le Stocks. This was done in the early morning hours in secret.

In 1933 his 7 foot 6 inch lead casket was found at a depth of 8 1/2 feet at the extreme end of the garden. This happened during renovation of the church. The casket was moved to Nunhead Cemetery.
