John Verner Sr. born 1725 died 1800, came to America from Tyron Ireland with James Pettigrew and his family. They Landed in New Castle Delaware in 1740. John Verner Sr. married Mary Cochan Pettigrew, daughter of James Pettigrew. These families migrated through Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina and finally settled in Abbeville District of South Carolina. They bought large tracts of land on the Rocky River. The Seneca River and Keowee River to its headwaters in Pickens and Qconee counties. John Verner Sr. and Mary Cochan Pettigrew had eleven children. David Verner Sr. born Feb. 20,1760 died June 10, 1852, John Verner Jr. born 1763 died 1853, George Verner born 1768 died 1853, James Verner born 1768 died 1849, Mary Verner born 1786, Jame Verner, Dinah Verner, Samuel Verner, and Nancy Verner. John Verner Sr. and Mary Cochran Pettigrew are buried in Providence Methodist Churchyard in Anderson County SC.
