Mary Helen Fawcett, 84, West Branch, died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, at Crestview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, West Branch, after a brief illness. Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Friends Church, 116 N. Downey, West Branch. Burial will be at Hickory Grove Cemetery, rural West Branch. Visitation is 5-7 p.m. today at Barker Funeral Home, West Branch. A memorial fund has been established.
Mrs. Fawcett was born Feb. 9, 1918, in Marshalltown, the daughter of Howard A. and Martha Grace Andrews Miller. She married Floyd Fawcett May 20, 1939, at the Methodist Church, Marshalltown. While living in Marshalltown she was a cellist in the Waterloo Symphony Orchestra. She attended Iowa State University where she met her husband. After their marriage they lived and worked on the family farm near Centerdale for 45 years. She was a member of the West Branch Friends Meeting and numerous community organizations including Eastern Star, where she was a past matron and 50-year member, TTT, Red Cedar Questers, Centerdale Woman's Club, Herbert Hoover Library Association, West Branch Heritage Foundation and was past chairwoman of the Cedar County Farm Bureau Women. She was gifted in knitting, sewing and other needle crafts.
Survivors include her husband; her children, Martha Luke and her husband Ken of West Branch and Port Orange, Fla., John Fawcett of Arlington, Va., Ken Fawcett and wife Helen of West Branch and Margie Kraus of Cape Coral, Fla.; grandchildren, Kendra Stuart and friend Dave Albaugh of West Branch, Kyle Stuart and wife Linda of Wichita, Kan., Kent Stuart and wife MarKay of West Branch, Allen Fawcett and fiance Elaine Zimmerman of Austin, Texas, Katherine Fawcett of Blacksburg, Va., Leanna Fawcett of Chicago, Ill., Thomas Fawcett of West Branch, Logan Kraus and Andy Kraus of Cape Coral; great-grandchildren, Ashley Stuart and Adam Stuart, both of West Branch, Lindsay Stuart, Kaitlyn Stuart and Braden Stuart, all of Wichita. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Betsy Cox.
