BLUEFIELD — Kenneth Solon Addington, 99, of 325 Oakhurst Avenue, Bluefield, passed away on Tuesday, September 16, 2008. He was born July 21, 1909 in Gate City, Virginia. He was the son of Hugh Jackson and Lula Watkins Addington.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Mildred Douglas Addington in 1989; a daughter, Erlene Aylor Addington in 1938; son, Samuel Douglas Addington; son-in-law, L. Allen Peacock, Jr.; brothers, Raymond and Kyle Addington; and a sister, Leona Moore.

Mr. Addington is survived by his daughters, Virginia A. Peacock of Bluefield, Susan A. Hutcheson and husband, Alan G. of Richmond, Va. and daughter-in-law, Patricia W. Addington of Fort Mill, S.C.; grandchildren, Darcy Addington Lee, Beth Addington Durgin (Doug), Leslie Addington Miller, Kenneth Hutcheson (Lauren), John Hutcheson (Jacklene), Amy Peacock Trojanowski (Brian), Catherine Peacock Finch (Marc) and Allen Peacock III., and thirteen great-grandchildren, sister-in-law, Florence Douglas, along with many nieces and nephews.

He attended public school in Gate City, Virginia and graduated from Bluefield College in 1930. After graduation, he entered the Management Training Program with JC Penney Company and worked in Petersburg, Virginia until 1935. He returned to Bluefield to work with Consolidated Brokerage Company. This career extended over a period of fifty-seven years--from salesman to Vice President and Manager and then to become President. He later served as Chairman of the Board until his retirement at age 83 in 1992.

On July 9, 1930, he married Mildred V. Douglas of Bluefield. He was a member of Bland Street United Methodist Church where he taught the Men's Bible Class for twenty years, served as Superintendent of the Sunday School, served as an usher, and as Chairman of the Administrative Board. He was President of the Bluefield College Alumni Association from 1949-1951. He served on the Alumni-Trustees Committee as Special Gifts Chairman for the building campaign to build Harman Chapel, the Women's Dormitory, and the Science Building in 1955. He was honored by Bluefield College as an Outstanding Alumnus in 1996. He was a member of the Lion's Club for many years and served as President, and was a member of Bluefield Country Club.

There will be a private burial at Monte Vista Park Cemetery followed by a Memorial Service at Bland Street United Methodist Church on Thursday (today), September 18, at 2:00. There will be a visitation one hour prior to the service at the church.

Serving the family as pallbearers will be Chuck Lambert, Ron Satterfield, John Mahood, Tom Richardson, Larry Morhous, Harold Brewster, Gordon Douglas and Peter Taylor.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to Bland Street United Methodist Church or Bible in the Schools Program.
