Charles served as a Private with the 15 Michigan Infantry Company-D. He enlisted on November 17, 1864. He was drafted in Cheshire, Michigan. On May 25, 1865 he was admitted to Harper Hospital in Detroit, Michigan for reasons unknown. His discharge came on June 16, 1865. During his enlistment he also served as a flag holder for the GRAND ARMY of the REPUBLIC.

His father, Aaron Tyler, died sometime around 1850, and his mother, Lucy Ketchum Tyler, remarried to Gardner Gates in 1852.
