On May 25, 1865 he was admitted to Harper Hospital in Detroit, Michigan for reasons unknown. His discharge came on June 16, 1865. During his enlistment he also served as a flag holder for the GRAND ARMY of the REPUBLIC.

His father, Aaron Tyler, died sometime around 1850, and his mother, Lucy Ketchum Tyler, remarried to Gardner Gates in 1852.
