Columbus, Georgia- MSG (Ret) Reginald J. Bayona-Sanderson, age 86, resident of Columbus, died on Thursday, January 28, 2016 at Oconee Regional Medical Center, Milledgeville, Georgia. Funeral services are scheduled at Edgewood Hall of Striffler-Hamby, Columbus on Tuesday, February 2, 2016, 10 a.m. Interment with full military honors will follow at Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, February 1, 2016 from 6-8 p.m.
MSG Bayona-Sanderson, son of the late Manuel Bayona and Doris Veronica Gomez Bayona, was born September 2, 1929 in Manhattan, New York. He was retired from the U.S. Army where he served his country honorably for 33 ½ years. During his distinguished military career he entered the military during the World War II and served in both Korea and Vietnam, and was a chartered soldier of Martin Army Community Hospital where he worked there as a Medic for over 19 years. For his superb performance and dedication to the duties of Martin Army, the Medic of the Year Award was named after him. For his exemplary military service he was awarded numerous medals and ribbons to include the Legion of Merit; Bronze Star (w/ V device); Army Commendation Medal (2OLC); Purple Heart (3OLC); Korean Service Medal (1 Silver Star and 2 Bronze Stars); and Bravery Gold Medal (Greece).
After retirement from the military he was heavily involved in the local community. He was a member of the Boy Scouts where he was Scout Master of Troup 123 and Troup 53. While working with the Boy Scouts he was awarded the Eagle Scout (w/ 3 Silver Palms); Silver Beaver Award; Vigil Member of the Order of the Arrow; District Merit Award; and Wood Badge.
MSG Bayona-Sanderson was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Emanuel Bayona. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Maria Leticia Ferrer-Bayona of Columbus; three daughters, Doris Janet Bayona-Sheldon of Columbus, Agnes Grimes and her husband Earnie of Smiths Station, Alabama, and Martha Laura Flatt and her husband Warren of Louvale, Georgia; two sons, Reginald James Bayona II and his wife Debra of Pine Mountain, Georgia and Joseph Raymond Bayona of Columbus; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.
In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made Chattahoochee Council of Boy Scouts, 1237 1st Avenue, Columbus, Georgia 31901. -
