Artist, founder of Art Institute of Colorado, WWII Veteran. Born to Croatian immigrants, Marko and Matilda Jelaca; his mother was a passenger on the Carpathian when it rescued survivors of the Titanic. Jellico served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II as a special illustrator and artist; his murals decorated 64 military chapels. After the war he became a highly renowned artist of oil paintings and commercial art. Jellico bought a small fine arts school in a seedy part of lower downtown Denver; about 30 students attended the school then called the Colorado Institute of Art; his leadership and reputation grew the insitute to 2,350 students and it is now known as the Art Institute of Colorado located in 10-story building. Jellico's students included renowned sculptor Lynn Kircher, also an instructor at the institute. Three of his paintings hung in the White House during the Eisenhower administration; he was also an instructor at the Pittsburgh Institute of Art and had been a student of Norman Rockwell. Jellico also authored a book, How to Draw Horses; amd was listed in numerous Who's Who publications.
