Dr. Nathan Dow Benedict, superintendent of the New York State Insane Asylum, moved to Magnolia Springs, FL around 1851 so he could recover from failing health. He created a small hotel that later helped to launch the "Saratoga of the South" - Magnolia Springs Hotel. When the Civil War drew to a close, the Union gov't created a hospital and refugee camp for the recently freed slaves, and Dr. Benedict was gainfully employed by the gov't as a physician in Magnolia. Later, Dr. Benedict moved to St. Augustine where he took charge of the Army General Hospital. In addition to medicine, Dr. Benedict was also a County Judge in St. Johns County, FL; authored several medical books and is mentioned in books about Elizabeth Blackwell, the 1st woman doctor. Dr. Benedict married Emma Ewing Harris and they had 6 children.
