Detroit piano/organ store owner, later owning a theater chain in Michigan & Ontario and leasing the Detroit Opera House from 1879 until he died. He helped the annual return of the most-famous national performers from opera, Shakespeare, vaudeville and circuses. His successor, Bertram, his son, became President of the Whitney Amusement Co. & Manager of the Detroit Opera House, bringing the first movies to Michigan in 1896. "C. J." saw a future in electricity and served to organize the Brush Electric Co. in 1880, which became the Detroit Edison Co. in 1902 (now DTE Energy).
