O.J. Saxton Dies Thursday
Orvan J. Saxton, 71, of route 1 Scottville, died this morning in Memorial Hospital of Mason County.
He was born Feb. 5, 1900, in Eden Township, where he grew up. He was graduated from Scottville High School in 1917. He moved to Detroit following graduation, where he was a reporter with Detroit News, Detroit Times and Hearst Newspapers of Canada, covering the Canadian parliament.
He returned to Scottville in 1931 and was married on June 19, 1932, in Custer to Nondes Z. Leedy, who survives.
Mr. Saxton farmed and was very active as an auctioneer in Scottville, Hart and various other areas. He was employed at Briggs Hardware since 1954 and had served as supervisor for Riverton Township and as chairman of the county board of supervisors.
He was a member of Sugar Ridge Church of the Brethren.
Surviving in addition to his widow are one son, Jon L. of Scottville; one brother, William, of Ludington; two sisters, Mrs. John (Nellie) Reinoehl of Custer and Mrs. William (Mable) Bacon of Custer; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Stephens Funeral Home.

Orvan J. Saxton, wro (sic) for the past 17 years has been livestock auctioneer at the Scottville Livestock market and for 16 years has held the same position at the Hart livestock sale has resigned from both sales and will become associated with the Briggs Hardware store at Scottville as sales manager.
He claims the record of the state so far as Livestock auctioneers go in being with one sale the most number of years.
Born on a farm in Eden township to the late Mr. and Mrs. William Saxton, he attended grade school at the Marble school and high school at Scottville from where he graduated in 1917.
He spent the next year at Mason County Normal and when 19 years of age went to Detroit where he of age went to Detroit, working for 14 years for Detroit and Canadian newspapers.
In 1931. he felt the desire to return to his home county. Being raised on farm, he returned to farm work and the auctioneering business which he jokingly started with the late John Filbrun, early auctioneer of Scottville.
In June 1932, he was married to the former Nondes Leedy of Riverton. They have a son Jon L. a student in the eighth grade at Scottville school.
Active in all community affairs, he is serving his seventh year as supervisor of Riverton township, is an active member of Church of the Brethren in south Custer, Riverton Farm bureau, Scottville Boosters and Harmony Grange band.
