John Nelson Nicholas 1791 - d. 10 Jul 1826, Lexington Kentucky.
Nelson was the brother-in-law of James Gabriel Trotter, James having married Besty/Elizabeth Nicholas in 1811.

Yourself and family are respectfully invited to attend the funeral of Nelson Nicholas Esq., from the residence of Col. James Trotter, in the vicinity, to the family burial place, this morning at half past 8 o'clock. Lexington 11 Jul 1826

He was the editor and proprietor of the Kentucky Whig Newspaper, which was started by Albert Gallatin Hodges.

14 Jul 1826 Kentucky Gazette - DIED - At the residence of Col. James Trotter near Lexington, on Monday last Mr. Nelson Nicholas editor and proprietor of the Kentucky Whig.

10 Jul 1826 Kentucky Reporter - Died this forenoon Nelson Nicholas, Editor of Kentucky Whig.

The Kentucky Gazette announced the death "at the residence of Col. James Trotter, near Lexington, on Monday last, (July 10, 1826) of Mr. Nelson Nicholas, editor and proprietor of the Kentucky Whig." He was buried in the Trotter tomb on Lafayette Street between East High and Euclid.

Daily National Intelligencer, Washington DC 26 Jul 1826 - Deaths: At the residence of Colonel James Trotter, in the vicinity of Lexington, Ky, about 11 o'clock of the forenoon, on Mondy, the 10th inst. NELSON NICHOLAS, Esq., the editor and proprietor of the Kentucky Whig. He was interred the following day, at the family burying ground, by the side of his father, the late Col. George Nicholas and his mother, Mrs. Mary Nicholas.

Aurora and Franklin Gazette, Philadelphia, PA 28 Jul 1826 - the last Kentucky Whig announces the death of its able and useful Editor, Nelson Nicholas, Esq. He died on the 10th instant, at the residence of Colonel James Trotter, near Lexington, and was interred the following day by the side of his honored father the late Colonel George Nicholas.

From the William and Mary Quarterly, they show that a reported letter written by Thomas Jefferson were among the papers of John Nelson Nicholas, when he was killed in a political duel near Lexington in March or August 1826, the papers were willed to Capt. Richard Hawes,Jr. of Lexington, his brother in law. [Just reporting this, have not proved or disproved any of this data in regards to a duel]

[Note- Capt. Richard Hawes was the brother of Edwin Hawes. Edwin Hawes married Cary Ann Trotter, the daughter of James Gabriel Trotter.]
