Helen Iphigenia Mendenhall, 92, of Fort Dodge, passed away in her home, Friday, April 20, 2012 from the complications of pancreatic cancer. She was with family that loved her and cared for her throughout her illness.

Born to Vernon T. and Fern McElhiney October 25, 1919 she was one of three children, the last of their three children to survive. In 1940, she married Victor Mendenhall, working wherever he was stationed in the Navy in clerical field as this was her chosen profession. In 1950, Helen and Victor were blessed with their son, Allen. Helen loved motherhood, and enjoyed the blessings of motherhood while working at the meat locker she and Victor owned in Sharpsburg, Iowa. Victor then accepted a position with Safeway Foods in Red Oak, Iowa. In 1962, when the Fort Dodge Safeway Store promotion came available, the Mendenhalls planted roots here in Fort Dodge. After Allen was in junior high Helen went back to work in the clerical field, working at USG until her retirement in 1985. Throughout her life she enjoyed bowling with her bowling league, card clubs, knitting, sewing, cross-stitching, and serving her church wherever needed, as she also worked in the three churches where the family attended in Sharpsburg, Red Oak and Missouri Valley. Helen was also a member of First Baptist Church and would attend until health issues became cumbersome. Helen's heart was as big as the life she led and is survived by her son Allen, daughter-in-law (who she referred to her as her daughter and vice versa) Denise, six grandchildren (Merrideth Anne, deceased), and five great-grandchildren. She loved having her youngest great-grandchild at the house several times a week while Denise cared for both of them.

Visitation will be Wednesday at the Gunderson Funeral Home from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM, with funeral services at 10:00 AM Thursday at the First Baptist Church in Fort Dodge.
