James married, Ann Dillard Love, daughter of Col Robert Love, one of his father's commanding officers in the campaign against the Cherokee Indians. James owned a retail store for some time at the Cross Roads between Turkey and New Found creeks in Buncombe County. He was very successful in his business enterprises, and became a man of considerable wealth for that day.
In 1830 he was elected State Senator from Buncombe County, and again in 1836. In 1835 he served in the Constitutional Convention from Buncombe County. He was one of the founding fathers of the city of Waynesville, Haywood County, NC.
James died in an accident as the result of being thrown and killed from a mule while he was riding to Waynesville.
