Lois Marie (Kilkelly) Smith , 75, of Rockford, died at 1:45 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 8, 1999, in SwedishAmerican Hospital after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born Feb. 13, 1924, in Darlington, Wis., daughter of Homer T. and Florence (Judkins) Kilkelly. Attended Darlington schools and graduated from Darlington High School. Came to Rockford in 1943 and worked for Sundstrand Corporation, where she met husband, Arthur F. Smith . He died May 5, 1990, after nearly 46 years of marriage. They were blessed with six children. Lois worked 33 years for Yahr-Lange Drug Company until retiring. Former member of 7th Ward Democratic Club. Faithful and proud lifelong Democrat. In recent years, she was a member of St. James Catholic Church and involved in several church activities. She did volunteer work for St. James/Trinity Lutheran food pantry and was a volunteer server for Golden Agers Center. Also belonged to Harmony Singing Society, Baltic and Svithoid Clubs. She, along with her late husband, enjoyed the friendships and social activities of these clubs for many years. Survivors include children, Rosemary Kopp, Janette (Vito) Grisanzio, Phyllis Grisanzio, all of Rockford, Patricia (Gerald) Haney of Machesney Park, Daniel (Yvonne) Smith of Cherry Valley and Kathleen (Lawrence) Haney of Summerfield, Fla. Lois was particularly proud of her 13 grandchildren, William Kopp, Gloria (Mike) Miller, Florence Kopp, Frank (Leslie) Haney, Jason Haney, Domenic (Tracy L.) Grisanzio, Vito Grisanzio Jr., Michael Grisanzio, James (Tracy K.) Grisanzio, Daniel Smith Jr., Christina Smith , David (fiancee Renee) Haney and Thomas Haney four great-grandchildren, Lea Kopp-Crabb, Patricia Rose Jones, Domenic Grisanzio and Madeleine Rose Grisanzio very special sister-in-law, Mary Pat Kilkelly of Darlington three nieces and two nephews. Predeceased by beloved younger brother, William on Dec. 21, 1996. The family offers special thanks to Mom's many friends, especially Olga Grahn and Ruth Fisher, the "community care" staff, the Rev. David Beauvais and St. James Church staff, Dr. Donald Hajek and his oncology staff, SwedishAmerican Hospital 7th and 9th floor nursing staffs for their fine and compassionate care preceding her death.

Services at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 11, in St. James Catholic Church, with the Rev. David E. Beauvais, pastor, officiating. Burial in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, in Fitzgerald & Associates Funeral Home, Riverside Chapel, 3910 N. Rockton Ave., with Christian Wake Service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation also from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday in the church. Memorials to St. James Catholic Church of Rockford.
