Ervin Philip Smith December 8, 1919 April 13, 2012 Born on December 8, 1919, in Bakersfield, CA, to Arthur and Martha Smith, the oldest of six children, living in the Rosedale area on the family farm, he graduated from the Rosedale Union School, Kern County Union High School, and attended Azusa Pacific College. During his service with the U.S. Army during World War II, he married Florence Evelyn Skiles on January 13, 1943. Woodworking was his passion, and his knowledge grew into a career in lumber starting with Bakersfield Building Materials, which grew into King Lumber, retiring from Diamond Lumber. He was a charter member of the First Baptist Church of the Nazarene, participating in many ways, from mowing the lawns to serving as a beloved Sunday school teacher. He was actively attending Ridgeview Nazarene. He was predeceased by his wife, Florence; and siblings, Aaron, Leo, Evelyn, and Verl. He is survived by his sister, Phyllis Putnam; three sons, Phil Smith and wife, Nan, Gary Smith and wife, Inez, and Curtis Smith and wife, Cindy; along with numerous grand, great-grand, and great-great- grandchildren. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, April 21, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 3700 River Blvd. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Teen Challenge.
