Grampa Joe was born in Hammond, IN his name was Julius Orville, but he never liked either name and went mainly by Joe, his initials. His Father, Julius August, left his wife Clara around 1900. Clara died in 1915. The boys were raised by The John and Madge Thistle. John was a founder of the Painters and decorators union and all three boys become painters. He was a veteran of The First World War and I believe he was at the Battle of Chateau Thierry. After the war he met my grandmother Irene Yesenko and had one son, Robert, my father. He was a painter and paper hanger most of his life.
