George Slade Schuster - Rochester
Rochester - A memorial service will be held for George Slade Schuster at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Calvary Episcopal Church with the Rev. Nicklas Mezacapa officiating. Private burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
Mr. Schuster, 91, of Rochester, former chairman of the Mayo Clinic Department of Administration, died Friday (Sept. 17, 1999) at Charter House Health Center.
Born Dec. 16, 1907, in Rochester and he graduated from Rochester High School in 1923. He received a bachelor of arts degree from Carleton College in 1927 and a masters in business administration from Harvard University in 1929. He joined Mayo in the business office in 1929. In 1935, he married Mary Madden Kenney in New York City and she preceded him in death. In 1983 he married Blanid K. "Bonnie" Weld in 1983 in Rochester. She also preceded him in death.
During his career at Mayo, he served on many of its administrative committees. He was chairman of the Department of Administration from 1952 to 1970. During the planning and construction of the Mayo Building he was building committee chairman. He was a member and officer of the Mayo Foundation Board of Trustees from 1951 to 1969 and served on the Mayo Clinic Board of Governors from 1952 to 1963. He was a longtime community leader, serving as member and officer of such organizations as the Rochester Chamber of Commerce, Rochester Rotary Club and Gamehaven Area Boy Scout Foundation. He joined others in organizing the Rochester Area Foundation and Industrial Opportunities Inc. He also served on the board of Carleton College, Kahler Corp., and Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co. Mr. Schuster retired from Mayo in December 1971.
Survivors include two sons, Daniel M. of Lake City and G.S. Jr. of Faribault, Minn.; a daughter, Mary (Mrs. Peter S.) Rhode of Roseville, Minn.; a stepdaughter, Mary Ann (Mrs. Jay V. N.) Crane of Hickory, N.C.; nine grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. A brother preceded him in death.
Vine Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to Rochester Area Foundation.

George Slade Schuster, age 91, of Rochester, died Sept. 17, 1999. Former chairman of the Mayo Clinic Dept. of Administration. He was known as G Slade Schuster. He lived in Rochester, Minnesota. He was employed at the Mayo Clinic, and eventually became chairman of the board. He retired in 1971. He and his wife Mary Madden had three children. She died at age 79 in 1981, and he married Blanid "Bonny" Kelly Weld in 1983. She died in 1992. He lived until 1999, dying at age 91 years, 9 months, 1 day.
