Laurie Ellen Shainker (née Scherzer), known as "Pie," of Las Vegas, Nev., beloved wife of 31 years to Herbert S.; devoted mother of Stacie (Kery) Hutner, Alyson, and Carly; dear sister of Linda (Irwin) Lewis; daughter of Belle Scherzer and the late Sydney Scherzer, died peacefully with her family by her side on July 29 at age 57 after a courageous, 15-year battle with breast cancer.

Born April 24, 1954, in Newark, N.J., Mrs. Shainker earned a bachelor's degree in occupational therapy from Boston University in 1976. In college, she met Herbert S. Shainker of Cleveland, and they were married on Sept. 2, 1979. For more than 25 years, the couple lived in Beachwood, where they raised their 3 daughters. From 1996-2003, they owned and operated Steve's Ice Cream at Pavillion Mall. In 2004, the couple moved to Las Vegas for retirement. Mrs. Shainker was a remarkable woman who loved life, was devoted to her family, and was an avid mah jongg player.
