Herbert Irving Sutherland, Jr. was born July 29, 1924 in Yonkers, New York. He was the third and youngest child of Herbert Irving Sutherland, Sr. and Margaret Mitchel Morrison Sutherland. He grew up in Yonkers and graduated from Gorton High School in 1941. After high school he joined the Navy and attended Naval Air Cadet training at the University of Tennessee at Martin where he met his future wife Millie Faye Butler. Herb became a Machinists Mate and served the rest of his active duty in the South Pacific. In the meantime, Millie graduated from the University of Tennessee and they were married on July 5, 1947 at the Methodist Church in Glasgow, Kentucky.

After they were married, Herb attended Junior College in Mohawk, New York and Millie taught Junior High at Whitesboro Central School in Whitesboro. Then they traveled to Pullman, Washington where Herb completed his B.A. degree in Hotel Management at Washington State University. Then after a brief stay at Herb's parents home in Yonkers, New York, they moved to White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia where Herb was the Catering Manager for the Greenbrier Resort. After this, they moved to Tucson, Arizona, where Herb was the Catering Manager for the Santa Rita Hotel. Their first child was born when they were in Tucson.

After beginning a family, which ultimately consisted of one son and two daughters, Herb was tired of the odd hours in hotel management so they moved to Southern California where Herb became a Fire Insurance Adjuster. Herb worked for the National American Insurance Company which was a subsidiary of Ahmanson, and then the Ohio Farmers Insurance Company which eventually became known as Westfield Insurance Company. Herb worked his way up to West Coast Claims Supervisor by the time he retired.

Herb was a Boy Scout leader, a member of the Honorable Order of the Blue Goose and a veteran of WWII. For many years Herb and Millie attended the West Anaheim Methodist Church and then later after their children were grown attended the United Methodist Church of La Palma and at the time of Herb's passing they were attending the Christian Reformed Church of Buena Park.
