According to her daughter's certificate of marriage in 1878, Marie's name was Elizabeth Kerner Braun/Brown and she was married to Christian Braun/Brown. Marie possibly was her middle name. They lived at 122 Willett Street in Manhattan on the lower east side, probably in a tenement house similar to the few that still stand one street over from that address on Pitt Street. It evidently was common practice at that time for foreign-born people to use an Anglicized version of their name on official documents such as marriage certificates and census reports. Hence Marie Braun's daughter was identified as Mary Ann Brown on both her wedding certificate and in the 1880 census and her son-in-law Franz Franz, a recent immigrant, was identified as Frank Franz.
