Donald J. Warren 45, formerly of Waverly, died unexpectedly Sunday (6/28/09) in Des Moines, Iowa. Don was born Nov. 26, 1963 in Russellville, Ark. Don graduated from Leavenworth High School in 1982. Don worked for the State of Nebraska Department of Corrections for 19 years. His life was filled with spending time with his children, family, neighbors and friends. Don loved hunting, fishing, golfing, or just a good game of cards. He was a friend and mentor to many and enriched all who knew him with his sense of humor and his endless ability to lend a hand when help was needed. He was known to thousands as the chief barker at Deb's hot dog & burger stand at UNL football games, where he coined the phrase: "Hot dogs, polish, brrrrrrats, Husker burgers. Step right up". He will be missed, but never forgotten, by those who knew and loved him. Member of Waverly United Methodist Church, he worked with youth groups, and was active in community service.
He is survived by his daughter, Abbigayl, and son, Chase, of Waverly; Cindy Warren, mother of their children, Waverly; mother, Nancy McCune and stepfather, Marvin McCune of Leavenworth, Kan.; brother & sister-in-law, Russ and Lisa (Catie) Warren and family of Lincoln; brother, Rodger McCune and family of Lawrence, Kan.; grandmother, Hattie Curtis, Arkansas; father-in-law & mother-in-law, Rod & Karen Hitz, Stanton; sister-in-law, Shari Pentecost and family of Omaha; brother-in-law, Jim Hitz and family of Columbus; many aunt, uncles, and cousins throughout Kansas (the Reichle Clan), Arkansas and other parts of the country. Proceeded in death by his father, two grandfathers and one grandmother.
Funeral Service: 11 a.m. Thursday (7/2/09) at First United Methodist Church, 14410 Folkestone, Waverly, with Rev. James Wallasky officiating. Visitation beginning 2 p.m. - 8 p.m. Wednesday with family greeting friends from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. at the Roper and Sons Waverly Chapel, 10851 North 148th Street, Waverly.
