James Willard Hart was born in Corbin, Ky. He was the son of James Emby Hart and Ida Pearl Lawson.
He was a survivor of the attack on U.S.S. Arizona in WWII and was a Fireman First Class. James was not on the Arizona on December 7th, 1941. The engine room crew was on liberty or were assigned to other duties at the time.
Pete's family was originally told that Pete was missing and presumed dead in the attack on the Arizona. They did not find out otherwise for several months when Pete sent a letter home to his parents detailing what happened! He never spoke to his family in California of what happened at Pearl Harbor. Based on the account from one survivor, after the attack, James may have reported to the USS Tennessee. He may have also taken part in salvage and the recovery of his shipmates remains.

James was married 1956 in Angola, Indiana to Ann Rose Mizcak Brodke, born 1913, Ohio. This was Ann's second marriage. Ann died Aug 6. 1982 in San Diego. Ann's son Stan Brodke knew James as Grandpa or Bill.
James retired from the Navy with the rank of Chief Petty Officer. James died at his home at the age of 89. His ashes were scattered at Sea off the coast of San Diego by the U.S. Navy. While he is not interred here, Pete has been returned to the Sea to be with his shipmates.
