He graduated from Tripp High School in 1954. He served in the US Army, with Company A 293rd Engineer Battalion, in Germany from 1954 to 1957. He received the Marksman (Carbine) Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
He located to Rapid City in 1957, and attended SD School of Mines. He married Donna Catherman on November 29, 1958, in Armour, SD. He worked at Knecht's as a draftsman. He taught Architectural Drafting at Canby Vo-Tech in Canby, MN. He retired as a housing inspector from Civil Service at Ellsworth Air Force Base in 2001.
Darrell was an avid fisherman, hunter, and gardener. He enjoyed dancing in his younger years.
Survivors include his wife, Donna Albrecht, Rapid City; son, Steven Albrecht, Rapid City; two daughters, Stephanie Albrecht, Mt Angel, OR, and Becky (Kevin) Kempe, Black Hawk; two brothers, Darvin Albrecht and Jerry (Shirley)Albrecht, both of Parkston, SD; four grandchildren, Jesse (Erin)Albrecht, Rapid City, Chanda (Francis) Romero-Kempe, Black Hawk, Joshua Kempe, Black Hawk, and Sasha Albrecht, Oregon; five great-grandchildren; and his faithful dog, Rugar.
He is preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Marlene Frey; and a nephew, Greg Frey.
A memorial service will be held Friday, May 4, 2012, at Faith Lutheran Church, Rapid City, with Rev. Jeff Rohr officiating. Inurnment with military honors will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
