Gladys received her college degree from Southwestern College, Winfield, and went on to Kansas City to become a Methodist Deaconess at the National Training School where, incidentally, she received a reprimand for playing tennis in bloomer. She continued church work in the tenements of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, before returning to Stafford to teach school, hoping to save money to become a foreign missionary. Fate intervened. She stubbed her toe and met her future husband.
