Uncle (my note: Ichabod Phelps, Jr.) nearly well. In the afternoon arrived at Buffalo. Called on Uncle Raphael Newell. Buffalo is beautifully situated, commanding a view of the lake. The canal and Buffalo Creek converge here; there are several elegant buildings." From John Montgomery Roberts' diary. John Montgomery Roberts was a nephew by marriage to Raphael Newell. Raphael's wife Roxy Roberts was a sister to John Montgomery Roberts' father Daniel. The Roberts and Phelps family were moving from Delaware Co., NY, to Tazewell Co., IL, in 1831.
