Raphael Newell, a pork inspector and engaged in agriculture, was the son of John Newell and Sybil Andrus of Greene Co., NY, and Southington, CT. He married Roxana/Roxiana/Roxalina Elizabeth Roberts, before 1801. Known children: George, Washington, Julia Minerva, Van Rensselaer C., Jane Louisa, Horace Griffin, and Lucy.

1831) Sunday, July 10th. "Passed through Williamsville, so on towards Buffalo. Good roads and almost perfectly level country, Now and then a limestone bed. Uncle (my note: Ichabod Phelps, Jr.) nearly well. In the afternoon arrived at Buffalo. Called on Uncle Raphael Newell. Buffalo is beautifully situated, commanding a view of the lake. The canal and Buffalo Creek converge here; there are several elegant buildings." From John Montgomery Roberts' diary. John Montgomery Roberts was a nephew by marriage to Raphael Newell. Raphael's wife Roxy Roberts was a sister to John Montgomery Roberts' father Daniel. The Roberts and Phelps family were moving from Delaware Co., NY, to Tazewell Co., IL, in 1831.
