She was born in 1881 in Illinois. Her parents were Francis Lee Robertshaw (1841-1924) and Ida Emile Richardson-Cooke Robertshaw (1849-1889). Ruth was one of seven children in the family.

She married Walter Kettler Cobelli on February 8, 1905 in Chicago, Illinois at the age of 23. She and her husband had three children: Carl J. Cobelli (1906-1995), Walter Lee Cobelli ( 1909-??) and Ruth Lucille Cobelli (1910-??).

She lived at a time when there was World War I, The Great Depression and World War II. She saw the invention of the automobile, airplanes and space travel.
