Obituary was published on 13 Dec 2005 in CT, Hartford Co, Hartford.136 Hartford Courant:
Robert L. McCumber, 85, of Glastonbury died on Sunday, (December 11, 2005) at Hartford Hospital. Born on November 27, 1920 into a farming family in Camargo, IL, Bob was the son of Frank and Florence (Helm) McCumber. As part of
depression-era farm life, Bob and one of his brothers exhibited chickens at county fairs to help put themselves through
college. When World War II intervened, Bob enlisted in the Navy and attained the rank of Lieutenant while serving in the
Pacific. In 1944 he married Jean (Camp) McCumber of Harristown, IL. Following the war, Bob graduated from Millikin
University with a degree in Engineering. In 1962, Bob and Jean moved to Glastonbury, and Bob was employed at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford. In the 1970's, Bob changed course and became a collector and dealer of antique toys and eventually acquired a very noted collection of antique mechanical banks. He wrote three books about toy bank collecting: Toy Bank Reproductions and Fakes, Registering Banks, and Chein Banks – Mechanical and Stills. Bob is survived by Jean, his wife of 61 years, and their four children: Brenda, Stan, Bruce, and Carol. He shared many happy years camping, square dancing, playing tennis, and traveling both in the U.S. and abroad. After his mobility was restricted by Guillain-Barre Syndrome in 1988, Bob avidly followed the fortunes of the Boston Celtics. In his later years, he was often found on the couch watching ''The Celts'' on T.V. Bob is also survived by his brother Dwight H. McCumber of Villa Grove, IL, and sister Louise E. Hawthorne of Sidney, IL. In addition, he is survived by eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Bob's large and busy family will deeply miss his wit, intelligence, and loving support. Visitation will be at the McCumber home at 201 Carriage Drive in Glastonbury on Friday, December 16, from 5-8 p.m. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 17, at Glastonbury Funeral Home, 450 New London Turnpike, Glastonbury. Burial will follow in the Green Cemetery in Glastonbury.
