Mr. Bates moved to Maryland as a young man and was empolyed on the assembly line for General Motors. After leaving General Motors Mr. Bates worked as a teacher for Anne Arundel County. He was an animal lover and enjoyed dog shows and was known for always taking in a stray. He turned his love for animals into a vocation, and found work at the race track as a hot walker.
