Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. Born in Jackson County, Georgia, he was president of East Alabama College, when appointed a Major in the 44th Alabama Infantry at the start of the Civil War. Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel following the 2nd Battle of Manassas, he became Colonel and took command of 44th Alabama following the Battle of Sharpsburg. He commanded the regiment at Gettysburg, Chickamauga, the Wilderness and Spotsylvania. In February 1865, he was promoted Brigadier General, assumed brigade command and kept it until the surrender at Appomattox. After the war, he became a professor of English and
philosophy at Ogden College in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
