Scandia Journal - July 18, 1929 - FIRE CAUSES ANOTHER DEATH - Grandmother of Duane Summer Dies from Shock of Tragedy - The tragedy, which ended the life of Duane Summer, also, took the life of another member of the Summer' family when Mrs. J. H. Summer succumbed to heart trouble and the shock of the tragedy, Tuesday afternoon at 4:30 just after the funeral of the fire victim. Mrs. Summer was the mother of S. J. Summer, who was severely burned in trying to rescue his son from the burning home and is the grandmother of the young man who burned to death. She leaves to mourn her going her aged husband, one son and three daughters. She had been in ill health for some time and the shock of the fire and the death of her grandson were more than her frail body could stand.

Scandia Journal July 25, 1929- MRS. JOHN H. SUMMER - Rachel Lula Gilbert was born in Geary county, Kentucky, Nov. G, 1851, and passed away at her home in Scandia, July 16, 1929, at the age of 77 years, 8 months and 10 days. In her youth she removed with her parents to Girard, Ill., where she grew to womanhood. Here she was united in marriage to John Summer on Oct. 7, 1869. To this union were born 10 children of whom six died in infancy. She removed to Kansas during the year 1855. The Summer family resided for some time in Norway where Mr. Summer was engaged in business. Later they removed to Scandia where Mrs. Summer resided to the time of her departure. She united with the Methodist church at the age of 12 years and remained a faithful member for a considerable length of time. In later years she turned toward the "Church of Christ." She leaves to mourn her departure her aged husband and four children, namely: Mrs. Etta King of Lincoln, Nebr., S. J. Summer and Mr. Minnie Isaacson of Scandia, and Mrs. Merlie Ellingson of Republic, besides seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and one brother Henry Gilbert of Rayfond, Ill, also numerous other relatives and friends. The funeral services were held on last Thursday afternoon in the Presbyterian church with interment in the Riverview cemetery. Rev. Charles Pehrson of the Lutheran church officiated.
