Mary was born to Diedrich Hoppe and Emilie Hahn in Blair, Illinois.. She was baptised 21 February 1864 in St. Johnnes Lutheran Kirche of Bremen, Ilinois. It is in these records that her birh date was found. Mary was 10 when her father died. Her mother died five years later. Mary Hoppe married Charles Kollwitz in St. Louis Missouri on 01 September 1894. Her obit appeared in the July 10, 1930 St. Louis Post-Dispatch on pg 7C and reads as follows:
Asleep in Jesus on July 9, 1930 at 6:30 p.m., dearly beloved wife of Charles Kollwitz, dear mother of August C. and Charles J. Kollwitz, dear sister, sister-in-law, aunt, cousin and mother in-law. in her sixty-fourth year.
