Benjamin L. Woolsey, 81, of Hammond, Ind., and formerly of Vandalia, died on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2008, at St. Margaret Mercy Healthcare Center in Hammond.
Services were held on Tuesday, Jan. 8, at Baran Funeral Home in Whiting, and a Mass of Christian burial was held that day at St. Casimir Church in Hammond, with the Rev. William O'Toole officiating. Burial was in St. John Cemetery, Hammond. A parish wake service was held during visitation on Monday evening.
Mr. Woolsey was born on Dec. 6, 1926, in Vandalia, the son of Leslie and Vivian Hansbrough Woolsey.
He was a resident of the Calumet region for more than 50 years, a retiree of Sims Motor Transport and a member of Teamsters' Local No. 710. He was a Navy veteran, serving during World War II.
He is survived by children, Benjamin "BJ" Woolsey, Randy Woolsey and his wife Kelli, and Mary Kay and her husband Tim Kowalke, all of Hammond, Renee and her husband David Simanson of Lodi, Calif., and Jeffrey Woolsey and his wife Beverly of Hegewisch; grandchildren, Dane Bath, Tiffany and her husband Scott Armstrong, Benjamin, David and Christian Cutrara, Leslie Woolsey Brenden Kowalke, and Ian and Samuel Woolsey; great-grandchild, Natasha Bath; brother, John Woolsey and his wife Patty; sisters, Anita Smith of Vandalia, Helen Neeley of Abbeyville, La., and Kay Dothager of Mulberry Grove; brother-in-law, George Semancik and his wife Wilma of Whiting, Dolores Woolsey of Bourbonaise and Nancy Woolsey Greer of Vandalia; niece, Ashley; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lillian M. Semancik Woolsey, who died on June 24, 2002; son, David Woolsey; brothers, Donald Pistol Woolsey and Robert Woolsey; and brothers-in-law, Cobb Smith and Harold Dothager.
