His funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Beach United Methodist Church in Howard. Burial and military rites will follow in Graceland Cemetery at Howard. Visitation will begin today at noon with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m. at Willoughby Funeral Home in Howard.
Stanley Cross was born on the family farm north of Howard June 21, 1919, to Almond and Grace (Lowry) Cross. He was drafted into the Army in 1941. He served at Fort Bragg, N.C., Madison Barracks, N.Y., and northern Africa. He was in the invasion of Italy, in France at the Battle of the Bulge and in Germany until the end of the war.
He married Ruth Stangohr Oct. 12, 1947, at Howard. They farmed and ran a goose hatchery business. She died Sept. 11, 1991. He enjoyed traveling, dancing and attending military and family reunions. He was a Miner County Commissioner, school board member, was active in the Farmers Union, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Beach United Methodist Church.
He is survived by four children, Raymond (Karen) of Sioux Falls, David (Wanda) of Brandon, Lois (Dennis) Gosmire of Canova and Myrna (Bruce) Hossler of Madison; a sister, Nadine Wunder of Brookings; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
